Zero Waste Period
Shubham Charitable AssociationMission Zero Waste Period: A Sustainable Solution for a Healthier Future
Since 1998, Shubham Charitable Association has been dedicated to empowering women and uplifting communities in Meghalaya, Assam, and beyond. Today, we proudly present our flagship initiative — the “Zero Waste Period” scheme — aimed at eliminating menstrual waste pollution and creating lasting social and environmental impact.
Our Goal:
To eliminate 500 crore units of menstrual waste pollution in India every month by 2030, protecting our environment and safeguarding the health of future generations.
What is the Zero Waste Period Scheme?
At the heart of this initiative is the Fresh Pad — a reusable sanitary pad made from high-quality, certified hemp cloth. Designed for durability and comfort, Fresh Pads can be used for up to three years with proper care. This revolutionary product reduces waste, saves money, and empowers women.
Five Key Benefits of Fresh Pads
- Long-Term Use & Cost Savings
On average, a woman uses approximately 500 disposable sanitary pads over three years, costing around ₹3000. In contrast, a set of Fresh Pads by Shubham Charitable Association costs only ₹300 and lasts just as long.
???? Estimated savings: ₹2700 per woman
???? A major financial relief for women, especially in rural and low-income communities.
By choosing Fresh Pads, women reduce monthly expenses and gain a reliable, eco-friendly menstrual hygiene solution.
- Environmental Protection & Water Conservation
Disposable sanitary pads take 800+ years to decompose, severely polluting soil and water bodies. Switching to Fresh Pads drastically cuts down on menstrual waste:
???? Reduces landfill burden
???? Prevents contamination of rivers, lakes, fields, and underground water
This move not only protects our environment but also contributes to cleaner, safer communities.
- Women’s Employment & Economic Empowerment
The manufacturing, promotion, and distribution of Fresh Pads generate sustainable livelihood opportunities for hundreds of women.
???? Enhances financial independence
???? Supports local economies
???? Encourages self-reliance and dignity of labour
This initiative transforms women into change-makers within their own communities.
- Community Awareness & Accessibility
We aim to employ two women from each village in every block of Meghalaya to:
???? Promote Fresh Pads
???? Conduct menstrual hygiene awareness sessions
???? Ensure product availability at affordable prices
This outreach will potentially provide employment to over 10,000 women, creating a statewide movement toward menstrual equity.
- Health & Hygiene
Fresh Pads are certified, lab-tested, and proven safe.
???? Used by over 200 women with no reported rashes or infections
???? Washable and reusable for up to 80 uses
???? Promote safer menstrual practices by reducing exposure to harmful chemicals found in disposables
Fresh Pads ensure comfort, dignity, and health for women during menstruation.
Program Implementation:
- Training: Women from every village will receive hands-on training in making and using Fresh Pads.
- Materials & Equipment: Necessary supplies will be provided to trained women for local production.
- Community Engagement: Awareness campaigns will educate entire communities about the environmental and health benefits of reusable sanitary products.
Why This Matters:
In India, more than 500 million women generate billions of disposable pads annually. These pads release toxic chemicals and persist in the environment for centuries, contaminating water and soil, leading to incurable diseases. Additionally, poor children often handle this hazardous waste, suffering from severe infections.
The Zero Waste Period mission of Shubham Charitable Association is not just about pads — it’s about protecting our environment, empowering women, promoting health, and fostering sustainable communities.
