Importance of Kongthong Village
Located in the East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya, Kongthong village has been included in the United Nations World Tourism Organization’s (UNWTO) best tourist destination list.
This village is one of the 12 villages where a special kind of 'Dhwani' is associated with the child right from its birth. This sound stays with him for life and the tradition continues today.
There are different types of traditions and cultures in India. One life may be too short to know about everyone. One such unique culture exists in Kongthong, a village in Meghalaya. A very interesting thing about this village is that the people here talk to each other by whistling and the name of every resident of this village is a melody. Here mothers do not name their child by a common name but rather call him by whistling a tune that is specifically dedicated to that person.
Apart from the natural beauty of beautiful mountains, waterfalls, and valleys surrounded by pine trees, what attracts more about Kongthong is its fascinating culture. It is said that when a child is born in this village, whatever tune comes out of the mother's heart becomes the name of the child and this practice is touching. Less talk and more tunes are heard in the village.
